WHAT SHOULD BE DONE?

The first steps to improve children and young adults' access to computer science education is through policy creation and reform, which means raising awareness and speaking to local and state officials about the issue!

Code.org has identified 9 key computer science education policies states should aim to pass, which focus on equality and diversity, clarity, capacity, leadership, and sustainability.

#1

Clarity

States need to start by creating a plan for computer science education.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

SEND A LETTER TO SCHOOL PRINCIPAL, TEACHERS, SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS, GOVERNORS, OTHER LOCAL OFFICIALS, OR STATE REPRESENTATIVES INFORMING THEM ABOUT THE PROBLEM OF EQUAL ACCESS TO COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATION AND WHAT THEY CAN DO TO HELP!

What else can be done to increase children and young adults' access to computer science education?

How to Make Computer Science Accessible to All Students

-Cullen White

The article by White (2015) further adds to the discussion on unequal access to computer science education, especially for those in low-income neighborhoods.

In addition to raising awareness of programs and organizations such as Hour of Code and talking to influential members of society, White suggests getting out into the community and actively engaging in computer science activities.

Furthermore, and perhaps her best recommendation, anyone with a passion for computer science and interest in teaching should pursue that dream and consider a career as a computer science educator to add to the computer science teacher shortage (White, 2015).
